Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1: 26)
God’s direction that people care for his creation is quite a job description! We were formed in the image of God and called to exercise dominion over all other living things. Given that big of a task, one may wonder: “How do I start?”. First, it is good for us to recognize that this job is not for any single person – it is a task we undertake together. A good next step is for each person to examine where their strengths and passions lie. Genesis time at Immanuel gives each student the opportunity to learn about a topic of their own choosing, in a way that interests them, and to share what is learned in a fashion that suits their unique personality. I believe Genesis time has the power to help students learn where they can make the greatest positive impact in the world around them. Many schools across the country are instituting what has begun to be known commonly as “Genius Hour”. Genius hour is a school movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students with a voice to choose what they learn during a set time period in school. Immanuel has adopted this practice, however, we are using the name Genesis Time, because we believe there is so much more to the student inquiry process.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1: 27)
It is extremely powerful and motivating to know that each of us was CREATED by a CREATOR to be CREATIVE! God has blessed everyone with unique talents, gifts, and interests that he wants us to explore and develop. It is our hope that in this process Immanuel students learn a little more about their place in God’s creation and develop a stronger sense of how they can ultimately serve both their Heavenly Creator and earthly neighbor.
We're glad you're here!
At Immanuel, we believe that you can be transformed by experiencing life with God in Christ. Our mission is to equip people for this kind of transformation by connecting people with Christ in a life of worship, learning, and service, whether you are exploring Christianity for the first time or grew up attending church.
